I wonder if the knife was not a folder but a hunting knife a fixed blade, that it would have caused more of a reaction before his taking of the girl. Even so the natural reaction is to step away from sharp things for most. This is a good example of the web of knowledge. He hugged the child, not good. He had a knife, very bad. Combine the two and it's much worse than either by themselves.

If we could simplify things; we could group everyone into society since advent of time into victims, warriors and guardians (lets say). Percentage wise we can assume that 90% of people are victims and of the remaining 10%, only about 2% are guardians. Given this circumstance, in populations like ours...the chance of having a guardian in the Walmart to help manage the situation is un-likely.

We always wonder why someone did not help out - they are not warriors or guardians. It's not just what the average person does.

Could we react in an effective manner to control the blade and get the child free? I'm not sure. Would we have enough time to do something without putting the child in further harms way? A great scenario to practice in class with advance belts.

I am making an assumption that based on the bad-guys flinch, his reactionary position; that he did not expect the police officer to close the gap and fire a round. Did he check the arm? Hard to see on the video. Curious.

  Bryan,

Four types of people: Victims, Survivors, Guardians, Warriors.
Please rework your percentages for me. I am curious what they might be.
We do know one thing in this story. The police officer is a Warrior.

I always forget "survivors" for some reason. As you state in the book Aware, "Be a victim or Fight" - I think that is the first factor that differentiates a victim from the three other stereotypes: the degree in which they will fight, the intensity of their commitment, and who they will fight for (IMHO).

The change in the numbers is really the last 10% -- how we divide the people that fight. Of that last 10%, 2% are Guardians (those that are willing to fight for others), while 3% are survivors and 5% are Fighters. This is based on a small subset of data. I need to run this against larger spread but I think it will hold true.

University Statistics class finally coming to use.

  Bryan,

  90% - Victims

  3% - Survivors

Guardians are those who protect those dearest to them (i.e.) family.

Warriors are those who fight for Larger Principles and will defend the rights of those they never have met.
