I heard the cop who was behind the gunman yell "gun". As the gunman dropped, I did see the hand gun in his right hand,(after viewing the video several times). The cop in front was in "red" when he shot the gunman. He did not hesitate at all, and neither did the cop behind the gunman. Obviously the gunman had done this before, he had no empathy whatsoever. The cops hopefully feel good in that they got the bad guy off the street - even though he had to die. Emotional fitness is so crucial!Skip Hancock · 12/27/2013, 3:19:59 PM
Always back to the Cycle
Attitude - While I always say that we have a "right" to stop someone from hurting us,
the policeman has an "obligation" to stop someone from hurting him as well as others.
Mike, the Emotional Fitness lesson here is about proper preparation before you go out the door. Each of us, including these policeman, can reframe these situations. Instead of hurting or taking the life of the bad guy, we are stopping him from hurting someone else. If I don't stop him now, then he might kill my partner, my children, the neighbor, the next person he comes in contact with . The point is that it is emotionally easier for us to save someone's life than to take someone's life.

Proper preparation cannot be overemphasized. We train in the dojo and practice in the streets and a police officer needs to do the same. They need to be able to apply their force continuum within the sphere of influence that includes Attitude, Awareness and Spiritual Fitness.
Well done job by the police officer. He (they) remained aware and in the fight the whole time. He took the shot which he needed to in order to stop the fight. I happy that after the shot he still looks (based on his posture and walk) to be in a positive frame of mind (spiritual fitness) to know that it was okay to do what he did.
Three really important and powerful ideas that work together to be a complete martial artist: Attitude, Awareness and Spiritual Fitness.
